History

Gateway has been part of Chicago’s story for nearly 95 years, helping shape the skyline and infrastructure that define the city today. From iconic structures like the Sears Tower to Soldier Field, Gateway’s craftsmanship and commitment to excellence continue to stand the test of time.

The Gateway story began in 1933, when George Weiland Sr. founded a family‑run steel erection and manufacturing business in Chicago. His focus on quality work and trusted relationships laid the foundation for what Gateway would become.

As the company grew, it expanded into new markets all over the country and with many capabilities. In 1978, under the leadership of George Weiland Jr., Gateway officially became an incorporated company, further solidifying its place within the Chicago construction industry.

Who We Are Today

Today, Gateway operates under the leadership of the third generation, George N. Weiland III, continuing the family’s longstanding tradition of service, safety, and skilled craftsmanship. And now, with the fourth generation actively working in the company, Gateway proudly remains a true multigenerational family business with deep Chicago roots.

As one of Chicago’s oldest ironworking companies, Gateway continues to serve the region with a focus solely on Chicago and its surrounding communities. We are proud to employ union ironworkers, primarily from Iron Workers Local 1, as well as skilled tradespeople from locals including 63, 111, 380, 444, 498, and others who bring craftsmanship and dedication to every project.
